In the Daily Mail today, a sycophantic Sean Poulter screams: “Get it while its hot!” and goes on to talk about the new Dyson Hot electric room heater.

Essentially a Dyson fan with some heating elements attached, the new Dyson Hot (badges as the AM04) fills a gap in the Dyson range in that it is a blade-less fan heater that doesn’t collect dust all over the elements like old-style fan heaters of yore.

However, some guy called Stephen Bayley, a design expert and founder of the Design Museum in London, thinks that the success of Dyson’s products lies not just in the technology, but from hot air blowing out of the PR department.

He told the Daily Mail:

‘No-one is going to get hysterically excited about a new fan-heater. But surround its launch with secrecy, non-disclosure agreements and the charlatan’s legerdemain of a carefully managed “reveal” and you might, just might, have a news story.

‘In the age of the “pseudo-event” when things are real only if they are reported in the media, managing the launch of a fan-heater is as important a business as designing and manufacturing it.
‘Thus, Dyson has made as big a contribution to the history of public relations as to the history of design or technology.’

Gosh, what a cynical fellow. But, he may have a point. A fan heater is no big deal. When it costs £269 it becomes less of a priority.

However, overenthusiastic Sean from the Mail went on to say:

The device relies on Dyson’s patented Air Multiplier technology, which massively amplifies the hot air it can create.

The net effect is that the amount of warm air generated is some six times greater than the amount drawn in at the bottom in a process known as inducement and entrainment.

The heater has its own thermostat which allows it to heat a room between 1 and 37 degrees Celsius. It will click on, should the temperature drop below the set figure.

The material used – Acrylontride butadiene styrene – means the heater is also cool to the touch, while it will automatically switch off if knocked over.

Nice bit of science; it obviously originated at Dyson’s PR office. Really, can these people not write their own copy and not rely on press releases from products they never saw?

(That’s a meat smoker in the background BTW). After playing around with this one above, I decided I wanted one. The 200 Euros is OK for a bespoke item, but the weight and size makes it prohibitive to ship to the UK by courier. And they dont sell heavy duty ones like that in the UK that I found. All we can buy here is mild steel Chinese ones and occasionally American Webers if you pay enough.

I am quite enthusiastic about the barbie now; so much so, I imported all my skewers, special fish grilles, tons of marinades, oil brushes and all kinds of stuff from Estonia (mostly Swedish brands) as the stuff in the UK is just total crap and very over-priced compared to what is available out there.

Now, as to why I think this will be a good topic: From the time I have spent in the US, I know we Brits have not the slightest clue about the barbie compared to our pals over the pond. We [as a nation; not me personally] cook cheap sausages in the drizzle; the Yanks are cooking fillet steaks and all kinds of other yummy stuff. The Aussies appear to have written the book on the barbie as they have the climate to do it almost daily – a lot of fish seems to be on the menu there. The Russians seem to have their own way, and seem to stick to variants of this rectangular steel box design, and appear to favour pork.

Whilst some foreign women are open to the idea of foreign guys, the language issue is a major hurdle to overcome. Many Russian and Ukrainian women surf the internet seeking foreign guys on forums and such in search of them.

People on internet forums speak casually, with many errors and with much slang, it is not an ideal place to practice or develop English. There are also many variants of English language (and spellings) here from across the world. Occasionally, Aussies must translate something for the Brits; or the Brits for the Yanks, etc. How does a non-native speaker go on unless they are beyond fluent? And few are.

Our sharp humour and side-splitting repartee (where it exists) seldom translates literally; rather, it requires interpretation. Software cannot interpret; only people can. So the women who read here using a translation programme often read gobbledygook where the English variants, grammatical and spelling errors, slang and second meanings form a jumble of words that are far from what was intended by the respective authors.

Can bad English damage your communications?

It can. Many people try to cobble together a relationship with poor communication fuelled by free software translation. Software makes many errors; but more importantly, software is only as good as what you put into it.

As many will know, my wife does a lot of translation for guys in this pursuit. A few weeks ago, a guy sent her something for translation that she read, and read again, and much of it made no sense to her. The reason? No paragraphs, little punctuation or capitalisation and atrocious spelling and grammar.

She asked me if I would mind running quickly through it with a spell check, putting in a few paragraph breaks, and correcting the big howlers and try to turn it into something in a few minutes that she could comprehend. I did, and from that, she was able to make it in Russian, be what it was intended to be.

Missing punctuation leads to much ambiguity; meaning that one must ask the author what they meant, rather than it being clear in the first place. Get the punctuation right and the message (not to mention the translation) will be clear. Here is a good example of how altering punctuation can change the meaning:

A woman without her man is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

I guess the point of the topic is to highlight to guys the importance of using the best English you are able to, when in communication with Russian, Ukrainian and FSU women.

If you have an HP printer and enjoy the free Image Zone software that comes with it, beware of upgrading to Windows 7.

HP Image Zone does not work on Windows 7. There is no fix, no workaround and no Windows 7 driver. HP doesn’t support the software any more, and has no intention of writing updated drivers for it. There is no later programme they offer that offers anything near the functionality.

I Googled this subject to death recently and this is the cast iron result. MS knows all about these type of issues and has something called an “XP Compatibility Pack” that is supposed to solve these problems. Unfortunately, with most versions of Windows 7 this is a paid-for add on. I dunno about you, but I think Bill Gates has enough money and doesn’t need any more of mine!

I love my new Windows 7. I also love my HP Image Zone. But the two never shall be together.

I got around it by rebuilding an old machine running XP that I only use for anything I want to do in Image Zone. That’s all I could do. I tried various alternative programs and none were as clean or as simple as Image Zone. Jeeze….. it was like losing a close member of the family I had used it for so long!

However, there was light at the end of the tunnel — of sorts. The basic “Paint” program in Windows 7 is well ahead of, and totally different to, any previous version. Its pretty cool actually. The only thing it doesn’t do is allow you to flick to black and white. But it also has some great features easily allowing you to insert arrows, text, speech bubbles and all kinds of stuff that Image Zone was lacking.

I dunno about you, but I find Photoshop far too complicated. It takes a couple of dozen clicks to convert an image to black and white for example. If you just want to resize images, add arrows and do simple stuff as you will want to do with many images for websites, etc., the “Paint” in Windows 7 is the one for you.

The loss of Image Zone will not feel so bad once you have gotten used to the all new “Paint” program.

What else doesn’t work on Windows 7? Well my old Dymo 320 Label Writer didn’t — no drivers for that either. So I had to spring for a newer 450 Label Writer from Amazon (which again, is streets ahead of the old 300 series ones).

So in synopsis, changing to the rather superb Windows 7 is not without its drawbacks if you are set in your ways with some old programmes and hardware. But having had my new Windows 7 for a few months now, I am thoroughly enjoying it. Windows XP feels somewhat archaic now and I wouldn’t go back. Yes, it was inconvenient losing a superb old programme or two and having to replace an otherwise OK label writer because of driver issues, but it is a small price to pay in the face of progress.

Many of you will be trawling the net for information on the new Doctor Who Live show touring the UK before you splash out on tickets. Well, you just found it.

We saw this today with out lad — A Dr. Who fanatic — at the M.E.N. arena in Manchester and I thought I might let others know what to expect. Firstly, as it is called “Dr. Who live”, you probably expect that you are going to see the Doctor, aka Matt Smith, um… LIVE, yes? Wrong. Not in the flesh at least. The Doctor and Amy Pond do not appear in person in Doctor Who Live! In fact, no original characters do! It is live in the respect that it is — partly at least — a live show.

Matt Smith’s appearance was only on screen — not in person. They filmed some stuff where he seems to be interacting with Vorgenson and the audience. That kinda works. Those fathers who accompanied their offspring hoping for an eyeful of the delicious Karen Gillan and her exceptional legs will be disappointed. She also isn’t there in person, and her screen appearances are fleeting. One would imagine they would have featured her more.
