If you’re looking for long barbecue skewers in the UK, you might have seen mention on social media of the famous “Russian skewers”. What are they? We’ll explain, and we’ll show you where to get the proper ones in the UK.
They’re not exclusively Russian per se, the design comes from the times when Russia, Ukraine, the Baltics and other countries were all part of the Soviet Union. Their use soon spread to Scandinavia too. But you’ll find ones like these in every dacha in Russia and Ukraine today.
When it comes to barbecuing, every grilling enthusiast knows that the right tools can make all the difference. Enter the Russian Ukrainian design long barbecue skewers, the secret to achieving perfectly grilled meat. In this post, we will explore why these skewers have become increasingly popular in the UK, their unique features, and how they enhance the barbecuing experience. Prepare to take your grilling game to the next level.
The Perfect Fit for Your Barbecue
With a length of 70cm and a usable blade length of 55cm, these skewers are designed to accommodate a range of barbecues, including Weber, box barbecues, fire pits, and other bell-type models. Whether you’re grilling in your back garden or at a campsite, these skewers will easily span the coals and allow you to cook your meat evenly. Most skewers in the UK are the ‘knitting needle’ type where the meat uselessly spins around on them when you try to turn them. These allow perfect positioning due to the twist near the handle, and the meat doesn’t slip.
Unparalleled Durability and Design
The Russian Ukrainian design long barbecue skewers are crafted from catering-grade stainless steel, measuring 1cm in width and 3mm in thickness. Unlike their cheaper counterparts made of flimsy rhodium-coated mild steel, these skewers are built to last. Their sturdy construction ensures that they won’t sag in the middle, even when loaded with a generous amount of meat.
If you like Indian cooking, these skewers will allow you to cook superb lamb or chicken tikka.
I also cooked Paneer Achari from the @Dishoom cookbook yesterday! How have I not cooked this before! So so good!

So What’s the Backstory?
So there’s a tale: The place that brings these in is an online appliance store in the North. The owner is a big barbecue enthusiast and has spent time living in Eastern Europe and Russia in the 90s and 00s where he learned all about Russian shashlik. Of the many skewers he found there, these were the best to use and the most prevalent design.
Nobody was selling similar long barbecue skewers in the UK. Certainly not of that quality. He brought some sets back in his suitcase and put them online. They sold quickly. He took a punt, contacted the factory that made the ones he liked the best and ordered a few thousand sets and made them available here. There’s an old forum post here that outlines the journey. People have since tried to copy them with cheap Chinese ones of inferior quality, but these are the original long barbecue skewers people are talking about when they refer to “Russian skewers”.
