What Happened to Anonymity Online?

What exactly did happen to anonymity online? And do we really need it?

I think that people were generally more likely to use pseudonyms or post anonymously back in the 1990’s; yet nowadays it seems everyone’s almost too open about themselves.

Just look at older interactive site or forum, and about 90% of them are run by staff going under usernames related to the topic in a generally anonymous way. And many of the members are a bit more secretive than people online now.

But then when you look on any more ‘modern’ website, it seems like hardly anyone is writing things pseudonymously (is that a word?)… Click here to continue reading this article

Mottram Bypass: Jonathan Reynolds Letter To Constituents.

Anyone familiar with the Mottram Bypass issue knows locals have been trying to get a bypass built around the villages of Mottram-in-Longdendale and Tintwistle for over thirty years.

Tameside Council keeps collecting Council Tax, smiling and doing nothing. They are only interested in collecting parking fines that destroy the once thriving market and shopping areas of nearby Hyde, Stalybridge and Ashton town centres.

They also – unhelpfully – allowed Tesco to build a huge superstore directly adjacent to the site of one of Tameside’s worst traffic nightmares (M67/Mottram Moor).

Although Tesco’s is useful to locals (and particularly useful to the professional shoplifters of  the neighbouring Hattersley sink estate), it has done nothing to ease the local traffic congestion.… Click here to continue reading this article

New Scam email from “Alex Williams”

URGENT ASSISTANCE NEEDED the scam email screams in its title.

Of course, he isn’t really called Alex Williams.

The African (usually) bank scam emails are not new, but nobody has submitted this one to Google yet, so I thought we would.

This particular one has two email addresses associated with it: alexwilliams650@yahoo.es and United-n@solid.ocn.ne.jp.

That suggest an origin of either Spain or Japan.

Neither is the case as you will find out.

Here is the scam email:

Dear Friend,

My name is Alex Williams and I work with a Bank here in London-England, The name of the bank is Metro Bank London (England).

The American Social Class System – Does It Exist?

In sociology, social stratification deals with the structure of perceived status in society. Now there are very few aristocrats and Lords of the Manor left, society has generally retained the old class system but the qualifiers are mostly economic and education based now. The latter of which will determine your speech patterns, vocabulary and [in the UK] accent.

But lets take a look at the United States. Does class exist there? Or is it a classless society?

Dark Net: The Hidden Internet They Call The Undernet – Deepnet

I happened upon an article in one of the papers this week that touched a subject I had never heard about, here is some of it:

The internet is like an iceberg. The web as we know it – every Google result, all the billions of pages we visit – is just a tiny fraction jutting above the waves. The vast majority of it is invisible to web browsers and the general public. This is known as the ‘dark web’.

Most of this unseen mass of activity is perfectly innocent – paid-for content, sites that require log-ins, academic data, and so on.

To those of us who live in Europe, it is a mystery to us that Americans insist on being a gun-slinging nation obsessed with firearms.

Mass shootings in schools and shopping malls are now very commonplace there.

Any Tom, Dick or Harry can have a gun and get himself full of drink and drugs and leap around killing people. And they do.

Americans defend their right to do that under the bizarre “Right to Bear Arms” stuff that is in their Second Amendment.

Do you Google for your own name? Do you check out potential dates? If you don’t, maybe you should! Other people will be Googling you.

I recently showed a friend how just by using his screen name anyone could get his full name, birthdate, address, phone, names of family members (including his children), place of business, job title…in addition to a lot of compromising information about cheating on his wife. This took less than 5 minutes, was an amateur effort, and cost nothing. He was in shock.

How to centralise a Paypal button?

For some reason, Paypal buttons when pasted into HTML on a web page always default to the left. You can insert as many <align=”center”> tags as you like and it wont make a blind bit of difference.

Centralising a Paypal button using HTML has always been a pain. Until recently, even after much Googling, the only way I had found to do this was to publish the button first, right click it and copy the URL, and use the link to link to a hosted image on my server and ditch the Paypal generated code.… Click here to continue reading this article
